Iranian oil tanker moves toward Kharg Island following blockade breach TankerTrackers data shows

21 April 2026 12:10

On April 21, an Iranian oil tanker approached Kharg Island after crossing a blockade line during its return voyage, according to maritime intelligence platform TankerTrackers.

“A National Iranian VLCC supertanker departed Iran in late March 2026 and swam on over to the Riau Archipelago where she transferred her 2 million barrels of crude oil to another VLCC. She then returned home via the blockade line. She’ll reach Kharg Island tomorrow,” the analytics firm reported.

Kharg Island is a small but strategically critical Iranian island located in the northern Persian Gulf, serving as the country’s primary crude oil export terminal and a central node in its energy infrastructure.

Its deep-water facilities and offshore loading jetties allow very large tankers to load oil that is piped in from Iran’s mainland fields, making it the key gateway for the vast majority of Iran’s exports.

Beyond its economic role, Kharg Island has also been a repeated focal point in regional security dynamics, having been targeted during past conflicts due to its importance to Iran’s oil revenues and global energy supply chains.

Because of this dual economic and strategic value, it is often described in international analysis as one of the most sensitive points in Iran’s energy system and a potential lever in geopolitical pressure scenarios.
